Schneider switches on solar array at Palatine headquarters
Schneider Electric, Palatine, Ill., last week unveiled the largest corporate solar photovoltaic array in Illinois, a 60 kW system built to provide power to the company’s North American headquarters. The system will provide 2% to 3% of the facility’s power needs. Naturally, it includes plenty of Schneider and Square D technology, including inverters, meters and monitoring equipment.
Nexans to Manufacture 34-Mile Long Cables for Offshore U.K Wind Farm
Nexans, Paris, has won a contract worth approximately $143 million to design, manufacture and supply the high-voltage subsea power export cables that will connect the London Array wind farm to the UK’s electrical grid. The contract was placed with Nexans by the consortium of DONG Energy, E.ON and Masdar, which is currently building the world’s largest offshore wind farm in the Thames Estuary. The wind farm is being installed on site located approximately 12 miles off the United Kingdom’s coast.
Construction is taking place in two phases: the first phase of 630 MW, comprising 175 turbines, is expected to be completed and generating power in 2012; the future second phase will add capacity to bring the total to 1,000 MW. When complete, the wind farm will supply enough power for around 750,000 homes in the United Kingdom. Each of the four 150 kV XLPE submarine power cables will be manufactured by the Nexans factory in Halden, Norway, and will be up to 34 miles in continuous length. Nexans press release
Van Meter Bolsters Business in Power Transmission Products with Investment in IDC-USA
Van Meter Industrial, Waterloo, Iowa, has invested in IDC-USA, a member-owned purchasing and national marketing cooperative of distributors in the industrial bearing and power transmission markets. The move will give Van Meter Industrial access to a 200,000 power and transmission products, bearing and related supplies from a network of 65 suppliers, according to a Dec. 11 report published in the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. On its website, IDC-USA says it has 200 independent distribution as members. Van Meter was ranked #33 on Electrical Wholesaling’s 2009 listing of the Top 200 Electrial Distributors.
Van Meter Moves Into New Sioux City Facility
A Dec. 14 report in the Sioux City Journal said Van Meter Industrial has opened a new $2 million office and warehouse in Sioux City, Iowa, that stocks $1.5 million in inventory and has a drive-through warehouse so customers can pick up products without leaving their vehicles.
Rockwell Asserts Intentions to Remain Independent after Investment Analyst Publishes Report on GE Potential Interest in Company
In response to a J.P. Morgan investment analyst’s assessment that Rockwell Automation, Milwaukee, Wis., would be a “good fit” if GE built up its automation business, a Rockwell spokesperson said in Dec. 14 Reuters report that the company’s shareholders would be best served by the firm remaining independent.
