If efforts to develop and install a smart grid are to bring the promised benefits, there must be something in it for residential power users. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers has released a white paper specifying what they think must happen to make the smart grid work for the masses.
The AHAM’s three essential requirements:
1. Pricing must provide incentives to manage energy use more efficiently and enable consumers to save money.
2. Communication Standards must be open, flexible, secure, and limited in number.
3. Consumer Choice & Privacy must be respected; the consumer is the decision maker.

HD Supply, Atlanta, reported a 27-percent drop in sales and a $257-million loss during its fiscal third quarter. According to information released to the Securities Exchange Commission on Dec. 15, HD Supply plans to consolidate 25 branch locations and cut 350 employees. HD Supply said in that document that it expects to spend approximately $45 million in a restructuring plan to completed by the end of the first half of fiscal 2010. www.bizjournals.com article
