Getting creative with solid-state lighting

To anyone following Kevin Willmorth’s “52 in 52″ project over at his blog, Inside Solid-State Lighting, this will come as no surprise, but those who haven’t yet discovered it should check it out. Kevin has set himself the challenge of coming up with a new working prototype solid-state luminaire every week. Week five’s project is a clamp-on table lamp made with turned tulip-wood that looks great.

Kevin works with Luminique LLC, which does contract design and product development for the lighting industry, among other things. Haven’t met him, but we enjoy his site.

Schneider to enter LED luminaire market with offerings in India

Schneider Electric has a broad electrical product offering, but lighting has played a minor role. That may change. The company announced it will begin marketing LED luminaires in the India market, initially targeting rural areas. The report came from the Hindustan Times’ LiveMint.com site.

“One of the reasons why it would be launched here first is because it has been imagined, designed, engineered and produced here in India,” said Jean-Pascal Tricoire, president and chief executive officer, Schneider Electric, who was in Delhi for the launch.

Tricoire says the first thing people want when they have access to energy is lighting. “We decided to go with disruptive innovation and to use latest available technology because at the end of the day, the ratio between the function you get and cost it represents is better than the previous solutions and we have got many people working on it. This function is new, this solution is innovative, but it’s also not expensive with respect to what it brings to the people,” he said.
