EMCOR nails hospital job in Wheeling, W.Va.

EMCOR Scalise Services, a subsidiary of EMCOR (EME), Norwalk, Conn., will install all HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems for the Wheeling Hospital’s Tower 5 expansion, a 7-story, 144,000 square foot addition to its existing facility, considered the most ambitious project in the Hospital’s long history. The expansion will include new facilities, such as a new state-of-the-art emergency/trauma center, intensive care unit, cardiovascular intensive care unit, center for pediatrics, private patient rooms and physician offices. The new addition is scheduled to open in 2012. Details

ABB to buy Baldor Electric

In an acquisition that’s sure to send shock waves through the motor market, ABB Ltd. (ABB), Zurich, Switzerland, announced plans to buy Baldor Electric, Fort Smith, Ark. According to a Baldor press release, this acquisition will enable ABB to penetrate the North American industrial
market by using Baldor’s strong North American market access and will allow Baldor to expand globally by using ABB’s distribution network abroad. ABB plans to acquire Baldor for $63.50 per share for an overall transaction value of $4.2 billion, including net debt of $1.1 billion. Details

Solar3D files patent for three-dimensional solar cell

Solar3D Inc. (SLTD), Santa Barbara, Calif., has filed a patent for its three-dimensional solar cell, which utilizes a three-dimensional design to trap sunlight inside micro-photovoltaic structures where photons bounce around until they are converted into electrons technology to maximize the conversion of sunlight into electricity, The patent application covers the design of the solar cell design and methods of fabrication. Solar 3D started trading publicly on the Over the Counter Bulletin Board (OTCBB) under the symbol “SLTD” in October.
“With the filing of this patent, we are poised to create something truly exciting,” said Jim Nelson, CEO, Solar3D. “Many industry observers and analysts have said that for the solar industry to truly make a difference, the developers of the next generation solar technologies will have to step up. Munro Distributing opens sales office to target Boston market

An article in Massachusetts’ The Enterprise said Munro Distributing Co., Fall River, Mass., reopened its sales office in Brockton, Mass., earlier this month so it can better serve the Boston market. While Munro has had a warehouse and distribution center in Brockton, the article said the company had closed its Brockton sales office a few years ago. Munro is ranked #103 on EW’s Top 200 listing with $70 million in 2009 sales.

ABB invests in wave energy

A posting at Zacks Investment Research says ABB Ltd., (ABB) Switzerland, has invested $13 million in Aquamarine Power, a Scotland-based renewable energy company that converts wave energy into electricity.

Belden expands in industrial networking with GarrettCom purchase

Belden Inc. (BDC), St, Louis, plans to expand its business far past its roots in electronic wire and cable with its purchase of GarrettCom, Fremont, Calif., a provider of advanced industrial networking products and smart-grid solutions. The acquisition adds industrial grade switches, routers, converters, serial communications, and security software to Belden’s basket of products. GarrettCom sells its products into power utilities, surveillance and security, transportation, specialty industrial automation, telecommunications, and similar demanding harsh-environment verticals through a network of system integrators, OEMs, and international distributors. Legrand’s Bausch promoted to new V.P. post in Northeast

Legrand (West Hartford, Conn.): Scott-Bausch Scott Bausch is now regional V.P. of sales for the Northeast in Legrand’s Electrical Wiring Systems Division. In his new role Bausch will lead the company’s sales teams for electrical wiring products in New England and the northeastern United States. Bausch joined Legrand/Pass & Seymour in 2004 as a product line manager, and he most recently served as the marketing manager for commercial and industrial products and the director of product marketing.He earned his BA from St. John Fisher College and his MBA from Franklin University.

Cooper buys manufacturer of heavy-duty televisions for hazardous locations

Cooper Industries plc (CBE), Dublin, Ireland, signed a deal to buy Norway’s Hernis Scan Systems AS, which makes closed-circuit television systems for use in harsh and hazardous conditions. Hernis specializes in explosion-proof television systems used in on-shore and offshore oil and gas production and for marine and petrochemical markets. Details
