Quanta to install fiber-optic cable for North Carolina communications network

ncnetworkAn article in the Triangle Research Journal said Quanta Services (PWR), Houston, will be one of two companies installing approximately 200 miles of fiber-optic cable for a communications network that will link schools, universities and research facilities in western North Carolina. North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN) is being funded in part by $28.2 million in federal stimulus money.

Cree among latest stimulus grant recipients

The U.S. Department of Energy announced more awards for promoting energy-efficiency research and development, and Cree Inc., Durham, N.C., won $3.7 million in funding for grid scale power conversion modules. The silicon carbide power modules “will develop advanced transistors for electrical substations that can make the electrical grid more flexible and controllable” said the website for DOE’s Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy program. “Using silicon carbide material, these transistors will achieve record high voltage (15-20kV). With these advanced transistors, electrical substations could replace today’s massive (8,000 lb) distribution transformers with much smaller, suitcase-sized electronic transformers (100 lbs).”

Eaton Wins $20 Million Bid for Turnkey Solar Installation for New Mexico VA System

Eaton Corp., Cleveland, will design and install a turn-key photovoltaic (PV) system for the Albuquerque, N.M., Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care System. The scope of the $20 million contract includes designing and installing a 3.2MW PV system throughout the site, including car port and roof-mounted arrays, as well as implementing a building-integrated system to help reduce demand from the local utility grid. This will be the largest PV system in New Mexico.

“Eaton is now fully engaged in the sustainable energy market,” said Paul Cody, vice president and general manager of Eaton’s Electrical Service and Systems Division. “This major project will combine our expertise in electrical components and power distribution with comprehensive solar power system design and installation.”

This contract is one of several recent agreements that Eaton has reached with government organizations, including $8 million in electrical products and services for the San Antonio Military Medical Center on the Fort Sam Houston Army base in Texas, supplying hybrid electric power systems for 35 fuel-efficient shuttle buses purchased by the U.S. General Services Administration for use on U.S. military bases and providing energy conservation at the United States Postal Service (USPS) Eastern Facilities Service Office at postal facilities in North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

Federal Buildings Go Green with $4 Billion in Recovery Act Funds

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) recently reached the milestone of investing $4 billion in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds for energy efficiency in federal buildings nationwide. Since the passage of the Recovery Act in 2009, the GSA has awarded construction projects to more than 500 companies, creating jobs in all 50 states, two territories, and the District of Columbia. To accomplish this feat, the GSA streamlined operations to quickly award contracts and begin construction on hundreds of green projects.

The GSA Recovery Act projects include: construction of a new energy-efficient courthouse in Austin, Texas, incorporating innovative features such as high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, extensive use of natural light, and a efficient “green” roof; the installation of solar panels and insulation on the roof of the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Regional Office and Insurance Center in Pennsylvania; and renovation of the Goodfellow Federal Center in St. Louis, Missouri, modernizing the 1941-vintage structure with advanced lighting systems, maximum daylight, a high-performance heating and cooling system, and solar hot water. The GSA was given $5.5 billion under the Recovery Act to create green federal facilities.
