Energy Focus Inc., a Cleveland-based lighting manufacturer, has formed a strategic alliance with Woodstone Energy, LLC a commercial and industrial energy services company (ESCO) that designs and implements turnkey, energy-saving solutions for Fortune 50-ranked manufacturers around the globe. Lighting Manufacturer Acquires Electrical Contractor/ESCO
Energy Focus Inc., Solon, Ohio, a lighting manufacturer, has acquired Stones Rivers Companies LLC (SRC), Nashville, Tenn., an electrical contractor with an energy service division from TLC Investments LLC, in a transaction valued at approximately $5 million. The acquisition was completed Dec. 31. Joseph Kaveski, CEO, Energy Focus, said, “SRC’s business is based on retrofitting lighting systems in existing public sector buildings. Given the large open order log SRC brings to Energy Focus, we expect to start out 2010 with a dramatic growth in our energy services business.”
Energy Focus, Inc. is a manufacturer of energy-efficient lighting products with a strong focus in government work. Its customers include the U.S. government, state and local governmental agencies, supermarket chains, retail stores, museums, theme parks and casinos, hotels and swimming pool builders. Ballard Power Systems to Supply Fuel Cells to Daimler AG
Ballard Power Systems, Vancouver, B.C., will supply Daimler AG fuel cell products for the auto manufacturer’s fuel cell car and bus programs. The agreement provides for minimum revenue of approximately $24 million over eighteen months from April 2010, with roughly equal distribution in 2010 and 2011. Ballard Power Systems is a clean energy growth company with product leadership in fuel cell power solutions, focused on the material handling and stationary power markets.

LEDS Now Produce 15% of Sales for Osram
According to a Dec. 21 Bloomberg report, the Osram division of Siemens AG (parent of U.S.-based Osram-Sylania, Danvers, Mass.) now generates 15 percent of its sales with LED technology. IMS Research, Wellingborough, England, says Osram is #2 in the world in LED production behind Nichia, Tokushima, Japan..
According to an IMS Research report on LEDs, the top three companies in 2007 in terms of total dollar revenues for packaged LEDs were Nichia (24% of the market), Osram Opto (10.5%) and Lumileds/ Philips (6.5%). Said the report, “These three companies have been well established as the top three for several years now. Although full data for 2008 was not available as the report went to press, it is believed that the top three rankings will be the same for 2008. Lumileds may face competition for 3rd spot from Seoul Semiconductor in the next few years. For several years now, Seoul Semi has grown aggressively and faster than the overall LED market and has risen steadily through the top 10 to reach 4th spot.”
California Approves Deal for Solar Power from PG&E and Sempra Energy that Will Supply 30,000 Homes
According to a Reuters report, California regulators have approved a long-term agreement for utility PG&E Corp to buy power from a 48-megawatt project being built by Sempra Energy and solar panel maker First Solar Inc. The move by the California Public Utilities Commission on Dec. 17 clears the way for building to start in January and finish in late 2010, and then supply 30,000 homes with power.
