EC&M is looking for the product of the year

Our friends here at Electrical Construction & Maintenance (EC&M) magazine are now accepting entries for their 2012 Product of the Year awards.

The EC&M Product of the Year competition was established in 2000 to honor excellence in new product development in the electrical industry. The prestigious awards program showcases the most innovative products of the past year and recognizes the talent and commitment of the people involved in development — from concept through sales and marketing. EC&M is proud to bestow these awards on inventive products that help electrical professionals do their jobs more efficiently and effectively.

All product entries will be judged by a panel of electrical experts, including engineers, contractors, and plant/facility personnel, selected by the EC&M editorial staff from a pool of the magazine’s readers. The panel will review and vote on each entry. The judges will also be given an opportunity to comment on each product. If requested, EC&M will willingly share these comments with you. Results of the initial judging will produce a winner for each product category in up to 25 categories.

Codale Launches Year-Long Energy Savings Campaign

Codale Electric Supply, Salt Lake City, Utah, has announced the schedule for its “2011: A Year of Energy Savings” program, a year-long series of trainings, sales promotions and events focused on energy-saving products and technologies. The program will cover several energy-efficient product categories, including LEDs, CFLs, skylights and daylight harvesting, as well as sustainable power management equipment such as switchgear, variable-frequency-drives (VFDs), transformers, capacitors, soft starts and power monitoring.
To educate and assist their customers with key energy-saving products, Codale’s year-long series will feature counter days offered at multiple branch locations that will focus on energy-saving opportunities such as taking advantage of utility incentives and using power control products to make manufacturing processes more energy-efficient.
Codale will roll out special sales promotions and offers in time with each product focus, and will end the year with a comprehensive “Energy Fair,” open to the public and planned for early November. Details can be found at www.codale.com/2011YES. Codale has worked on several high-profile green projects in the Intermountain Region, including the Utah Governor’s Mansion, the Utah State Office Building, Energy Solutions Arena, and Spring Mobile Ball Park, and has done several major projects for Salt Lake County.

Innovations in Marketing

An entrepreneur in Germany apparently has found a way around the European Union’s ban on importing and distributing certain kinds of 75W and 100W incandescent lamps: By marketing them as small, ball-shaped space heaters! Ingenious? The first batch of 4,000, priced at 1.69 Euros (about $2.38) each, apparently sold out in three days.

WiFi lighting?

Can’t get enough of wacky technological convergence? Here’s one that’s new to us: some researchers in Germany are working on wireless broadband networking that uses flickering LED lighting to transmit the signal instead of radio frequencies. The connections would have virtually unlimited bandwidth to work with, but would be limited to line-of-sight connections because visible frequencies don’t pass through walls – that means more security from wardrivers and eavesdroppers but less range. Mark this under “we’ll see.”

Nexxus Campaign Targets Spec-Grade Markets with LEDs

Nexxus Lighting, Inc., Charlotte, N.C., is launching a national advertising campaign around its new Array Lighting LED replacement light bulb product line. The campaign includes print, on-line and social media and is focused on the spec-grade commercial lighting market, especially hotel and hospitality, restaurant and retail store lighting markets. Advertisements showcasing Array LED lamps as superior to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are also being launched to the lighting industry.

Part of Nexxus Lighting’s thrust is a belief that too many “low-performing” LEDs are being introduced into the market. “With all of the low performing products being introduced to the consumer market by the large lighting companies, we felt it was important to target high performance commercial and institutional lighting accounts. These specification grade lighting customers demand higher performance, better color, longer life and the best in reliability and quality,” stated Mike Bauer, Nexxus Lighting’s president and CEO, in a press release.

Hagemeyer Certified for Space

Electrical distributor Hagemeyer North America, Charleston, S.C., said it has attained AS9120 Aerospace Quality Management Certification after an audit by QMI-SAI Global at its Charleston location.

The certification authorizes Hagemeyer to stock local inventory of critical items required in the aerospace industry. For the company’s aerospace customers, the certification means just-in-time supply of materials, reducing necessary inventories, lead times, and overall costs, the company said.

“This is a major milestone for our business,” says HNA Market Manager Matt Kiefer. “This certification further positions Hagemeyer North America as the leader in the supply of materials for the growing Aerospace industry in the Carolinas.”

The AS9120 “Quality Management Systems, Aerospace Requirements for Stocklist Distributors” certification was developed for pass-through distributors of aerospace commodity items. This standard addresses chain of custody, traceability, control and availability of records. Based on ISO 9001:2000, but with nearly 100 additional requirements specific to aerospace distributors, AS9120 provides suppliers of certified distributors with a comprehensive quality system focused on areas directly impacting product safety and reliability.

Madison Electric Teams with Time Saver to Launch Clip-It Line

Madison Electric Products Inc., Bedford Heights, Ohio, put together a deal with Time Saver Products Inc., Cleveland, to launch a new line of cable supports under the brand name “Clip-It.” The cable supports, developed by Time Saver founder Doug Hill, are polycarbonate plastic devices that make securing cable and conduit easier and “virtually tool-free.”
Hill started Time Saver Products five years ago, and has been in the electrical trade for 35 years. He started with the MC Clip, an idea that occurred to him when he was watching electricians struggling to organize MC cable in an installation, and has spent the five years fleshing out the product line and researching the market. The Clip-It line launched with Madison Electric also includes EMT clips, panel straps and MC stud supports.
There’s more info on the products at Madison Electric’s site.

Getting creative with solid-state lighting

To anyone following Kevin Willmorth’s “52 in 52″ project over at his blog, Inside Solid-State Lighting, this will come as no surprise, but those who haven’t yet discovered it should check it out. Kevin has set himself the challenge of coming up with a new working prototype solid-state luminaire every week. Week five’s project is a clamp-on table lamp made with turned tulip-wood that looks great.

Kevin works with Luminique LLC, which does contract design and product development for the lighting industry, among other things. Haven’t met him, but we enjoy his site.

Schneider switches on solar array at Palatine headquarters

Schneider Electric, Palatine, Ill., last week unveiled the largest corporate solar photovoltaic array in Illinois, a 60 kW system built to provide power to the company’s North American headquarters. The system will provide 2% to 3% of the facility’s power needs. Naturally, it includes plenty of Schneider and Square D technology, including inverters, meters and monitoring equipment.
